Zhijing Qin

Bio: Zhijing Qin obtained his PhD degree in 2015 under the supervision of Prof. Venkatasubramanian. His research interests include networking systems, cloud computing and cluster management. Currently he is the Engineering Manager at Google. His team is responsible for the efficiency and reliability of Google’s clusters.


Dawit Seid

Bio: Dawit Seid is a principal software engineer at Apple working on Apple Maps building systems that process vast amount of data about the world. Prior to Apple, he worked in the areas of distributed database systems and scalable machine learning platforms. As part of the technical staff at Teradata, he worked on distributed query optimization and was awarded multiple patents. As part of SAS Institute and then a start up named Aster Data, he worked on scaling up machine learning algorithms integrated into distributed data platforms. Dawit received his Ph.D. in computer science from UCI in 2007.


Ravi Chandra Jammalamadaka

Bio: Ravi Chandra Jammalamadaka serves as the Director of Machine Learning Engineering at Adobe, where he leads a team dedicated to building Generative AI assistants for creating, comprehending, and collaborating on the document cloud. Before joining Adobe, Ravi held significant positions at eBay, Amazon, Apple, and Amazon, where he specialized in constructing large-scale distributed ML, NLP, and IR systems. His work focused on optimizing business revenue by addressing complex challenges such as search relevance, topic modeling, and policy enforcement…etc.

In his academic pursuits, Ravi studied under Prof. Sharad Mehrotra at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), earning a PhD in Data Security with a thesis titled “Providing Secure Web Based Data Services on Untrusted Environments,” in 2008. Currently, Ravi resides in Dublin, California, where he enjoys life with his wife, son, and their Goldendoodle.


Shiva Jahangiri

Bio: Shiva Jahangiri received her PhD in 2022 from UCI advised by Prof. Michael Carey and Prof. Johann-Chrstoph Freytag. As part of her PhD research, Shiva worked on resource management and query scheduling for big data management systems, utilizing Apache AsterixDB. Shiva is currently an Assistant Professor at Santa Clara University where she leads the Databases and Information Systems (DBIS) Lab. DBIS lab consists of one PhD, seven master and four undergraduate students working on various database topics including databases for edge devices, query optimization, query scheduling and resource management
