SUMMARY:Industry Experiences with AI Agents: Internship Reflections and Group Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 2\, 2026\, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM\nDonald Bren Hall 3011\, ICS\, UC Irvine\nZoom Link: https://uci.zoom.us/s/99558483214\nZoom Meeting ID: 995 5848 3214 \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nTitle: Industry Experiences with AI Agents: Internship Reflections and Group Discussion\nOrganizer: Xiaozhen Liu \nAbstract\nThis informal seminar will bring together students returning from summer internships to share their experiences using AI agents in industry. The discussion will cover the agents and models they used\, useful tools and workflows\, practical applications in coding and other engineering tasks\, and how agents were integrated into collaboration and day-to-day work. Speakers will also share lessons learned\, limitations they encountered\, and observations on how agent-based workflows are evolving in industry. The session is intended to be interactive and discussion-oriented\, with perspectives from multiple internship experiences.

SUMMARY:Kary Zheng and Carlos Ernesto Alvarez Berumen: Translating Texera Workflows into Python
DESCRIPTION:Our presenters for this week are Kary Zheng and Carlos Ernesto Alvarez Berumen. The details of their talk are added below. \nFriday\, October 23\, 2026\, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM\nDonald Bren Hall 3011\, ICS\, UC Irvine\nZoom Link: https://uci.zoom.us/s/99558483214\nZoom Meeting ID: 995 5848 3214 \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nTitle: Translating Texera Workflows into Python \nAbstract\nVisual workflows make it easier to build and inspect data analyses\, but collaborators often need to work with the same analysis in Python. How can we move an analysis between these environments while preserving its meaning? In this talk\, we present Texera’s approach to exporting visual workflows as standalone Python programs. Through a running example\, we introduce the needs that motivate this work and the main ideas behind our solution: translating the computation\, preserving the meaning of the data\, and checking that both representations produce consistent results. Key design challenges include translating a graph of operators into Python while preserving execution dependencies\, and reconciling differences in data types\, null values\, and timestamps between Texera and Python. We discuss how these challenges shape the system’s design and the tests used to detect differences between native and exported execution. We conclude with broader questions about portability and reproducibility across data-analysis tools. \nBio\nKary Zheng contributes to Texera’s Workflow-to-Python project. Her work includes exporting visual workflows as standalone Python programs and developing tests to compare their behavior with Texera execution. \nCarlos Ernesto Alvarez Berumen is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of California\, Irvine\, advised by Professor Chen Li. He works on Texera and collaborates on the Workflow-to-Python project.

SUMMARY:Panel: "Rethinking Computer Science Education and Research in the Age of AI"
DESCRIPTION:This week’s seminar will be a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Mehrotra.\n\nPlease note the special time: we will be starting 30 minutes early. The details for the session are added below. \nFriday\, October 30\, 2026\, 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM\nDonald Bren Hall 3011\, ICS\, UC Irvine\nZoom Link: https://uci.zoom.us/s/99558483214\nZoom Meeting ID: 995 5848 3214 \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nTitle: Rethinking Computer Science Education and Research in the Age of AI\n\nPanelists:\n– Mike Carey\, UCI\n– Chen Li\, UCI\n– Faisal Nawab\, UCI\n– Dave Otaguro\, Google Irvine\n– Nalini Venkatasubramanian\, UCI \nModerator:\n– Sharad Mehrotra\, UCI \nPanel Description:\nThe rapid advancement of large language models and AI agents raises fundamental questions about the future of computer science education\, graduate training\, and academic research. As AI systems become increasingly capable of writing software\, solving technical problems\, conducting experiments\, and even contributing to research papers\, we must reconsider not only how we educate students\, but also what we teach\, how we evaluate learning and research\, and ultimately what role universities should play.
